And what does she bring with her?

I have a feeling we all need to save up our experiences and life expertise into more than just memories - that weakens in time.
A shelter. A frame. A home? Something that helps us remember what we know, what we have learned, what we have lived. So that we do more than move into countless iterations, sometimes uncertain if we have already lived it - repeating ourselves, or even adding mistakes where we once solved that single life equation with brilliance.

Maybe the Nomad solves it by storing herself in the collective conscious of the group that travels with her?
And how permanent must that group be to keep a picture of you? A fully functional personal Transporter. It will instantly beam/transport/delocate-relocate you to any desirable location on the Planet Earth.
Limitations:
* Only functions on Earth
* Only you may use it (and smaller objects you have on you)

2. A fully operational Spaceship. It can carry 200 people, of your choice.
It travels 400 x Speed of Light (as an estimate you will need 20 years to reach the closest planet where current astronomers don't rule out the possibility of some kind of life). The Spaceship is completely self-sustainable with a fantastic renewable energy solution.
Limitations:
* Does not have a Transporter

So, which is you?

I am an advocate for the Spaceship. I also believe that is happening no matter whether we like it or not, as a result of digitalization and socio-digital networks, so we might just as well be pro-active about it.

Let shortly look at those trends:

1. Socio-digital networks
Communities come into being/arise from shared motivations and passions.
We are no longer restricted to and bound by a geographical area.
We gather because we share similar ideas, interests, values and hopes. Not because we have to, out of duty. Internet as young global framework opens these borders. And by that, challenges traditional institutions of government.
So we see a shift from a mechanical world view to a more systemic view on human interaction and organization.
However, the net is being regulated by the producers of code. Who controls the programmers?

2. Digitalization
The notion of intellectual property is being challenged in a digital culture.
One might argue that ideas never can become anyone's property as they are the result of human interaction throughout history and an artist's life experience, and hence never something that appear separately and distinctly in an artist's mind.
Anne Nimus - a two-person team pseudonym - describes this shift in history - from viewing the artist as a craftsman and a messenger that could appropriate/communicate the common knowledge - to ideas being the property of an artist's unique personality. A shift that marks the beginning of and now, I would argue, outdated concept of copyright

The idea of a copy no longer holds the same impact as it did before digitalization.
E.g.
Resources used in producing a copy of a book.
1 book
- 500 g of paper
- 10 ml ink
- unknown amount of Erg (energy)

2 books
- 1000 g of paper
- 20 ml ink
- 2x (unknown amount)of Erg

Now the duplication of 1 piece of intellectual property can be done by a mouse-click, and the only cost is the hard-drive storage and the energy used when accessing the HD. That is if you don't want to go physical and have a real-life copy.

3. Paradigm of Openness
Looking into the history of the Free Open Source Software movement, we see the value of sharing the recipe. I argue that a product/service only is improved by the motivated input of many, instead of restricting it to the work of a single development team.
What does Open mean?
- The recipe/method for production/creation is available
- Transparency
What does Free mean?
It is more a question about availability than about something being given away at no cost. Or as Lawrence Lessig (founder of Creative Commons) puts it, what resources should be available and accessible to anyone, and not controlled by either state or marked?

I am curious of how we can utilize open source/copyleft/open copyright as the basic principle in designing a future business model? How do we capitalize on freedom (focusing on no-cost or on availability) and openness (transparency)?

As I wrote in a previous blog:

With the GPL (General Public License - stating that you have the right to use a given product, and the code for the product as you please - you may alter it, redefine, extend it - as long as you provide the people you distribute it to with the same set of freedom as you were given) the general copyright paradigm is challenged. That is powerful. And it can be capitalized. Open source as a concept isn’t necessarily about something being given away for free. Your customization of a product/service is key, if there is a community out there with that specific need. At the same time you empower you customers as they have the possibility to remix the product further.
People are driven by their engagement to create and to share – and what limits creation is interest/motivation, not copyright.

So, what are we afraid of losing when opening up?
Main reason must be reduction in profits. And this is where my journey begins.
Final project underway. The social media features (or even buzzier: Web 2.0 features) are throughly present where I work. We have company wiki's, company blogs, IM (Jabber) routines, feeds are partly shared among employees, and connections via social network sites are well-established.
With all the focus on the virtual presence in my working environment, I have somewhat forgotten my physical surroundings.

This is where I work, more specifically my work bench (Friday 18pm, Berlin):

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_GfeCvZCVxfY/Rz258d_Z0tI/AAAAAAAAAE8/-N1rlwopReA/s320/My-workstation.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5133463598766084818" />

This is my work bench again, set in the context of the room:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_GfeCvZCVxfY/Rz27Ld_Z0uI/AAAAAAAAAFE/gGHqDKOV-jI/s320/My-workstation_02.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5133464955975750370" />

The slogan from a Swedish crispbread commercial comes to mind: "You are what you eat"
You are where you work?

What impact does an Enterprise 2.0 business have on the physical working environment?
With all people connected digitally, have the physical sphere been down-graded?
Holm Friebe writes in his book 'We call it work' (Wir nennen es Arbeit) about the Digital Boheme. The current reality of loose organizations of people connected to a shared goal, however, they are working towards it at uneven hours, spatially dis-connected.
That makes me think of B-Productive. An organization that certifies companies which allows for dynamic working hours, to accommodate B-persons, as well as A-persons, believing we are productive at different times during the 24 h cycle.
And with the emergence of web 2.0 technology there is no longer a direct need to be present at a desk between 9 and 5. The importance lies in defining concrete goals, delivering on time & sticking to dead lines. The definite connection between space/place and an organization, be it a business, an agency or association, has weakened to the point of being non-existing.

Back to my work bench.
And its features: Rather minimalistic, non-organic, open, quiet.
How does it inspire me?

What associations do you get?
What do you need to be present around you, to do the best possible work?

//M/E

World Chessboxing Championship 2007

Yes.
Great combo.
Chess and boxing.
Competing strategies of the mental and physical sphere.
11 rounds in total.
